Evan Honer Rocks a Sold-Out Waiting Room in Omaha with Heart, Humor, and Handsprings

Evan Honer performed to a sold-out crowd at The Waiting Room Lounge in Omaha. “If you told me two years ago I’d sell out a venue in Omaha, Nebraska, I’d tell you you’re crazy,” he said.

Evan Honer has quickly become one of my favorites.

I was flipping through TikTok of all things when I caught him singing “idk shit about cars,” a song that I’m pretty sure was performed off the cuff for his followers on TikTok. Of course, he’s amazing. His lyricism is cutting. His voice is clear. Everything he does cuts right through to your heart.

I’ve been dying to see him live, and I flipped out when he finally announced an Omaha show at The Waiting Room Lounge.

The Arizona-born singer-songwriter’s songs show a knack for vivid storytelling and raw emotion. And his live show brought it all out.

The Arizona-born, Nashville-based Americana singer-songwriter bounded onto the stage with handsprings and flips before launching into a night of heartfelt storytelling, infectious energy and crowd-wide singalongs.

These folks were fans just like me, and they sang along to every word of songs like High School ReunionMe Without You and Take Me As I Come. Backed by a full band of keys, bass, guitar and drums, the show had a big, rich sound that still made room for Honer’s clear, soulful voice to cut straight through.

Between songs, Honer opened a pack of Pokémon cards from a fan. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, he covered The Cranberries’ Linger. And he debuted a brand-new tune fittingly titled Waiting Room.

“You guys are great. Omaha is awesome. I love it,” he told the crowd, visibly moved by the response. “If you told me two years ago I’d sell out a venue in Omaha, Nebraska, I’d tell you you’re crazy.”

Honer proved that his mix of sincerity, humor, and undeniable songwriting chops has built something special. By the time he closed the encore with Mr. Meyers, it was clear: Omaha loves him right back.
